If you’re in London, I highly recommend an easy day trip by train and foot to Petersham Nursery in Richmond.
Originally established as a small nursery by Gael and Francesco Boglione in the 1970\’s in the historic walled garden of Petersham House (a 17th-century home they purchased and is well worth a look in this Vogue tour!), over time it was transformed into a destination that combines horticulture, food, and design. The Boglione’s renovated the existing structures, including the glasshouses, to create a truly unique retail and dining experience that feels suited to its history and bucolic setting.
In 2011, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star, making it one of the few garden center cafes to receive such recognition. I\’ve enjoyed a weekend champagne brunch in the restaurant and a jacket potato in the teahouse – both experiences were incredibly delicious and I recommend doing at least one on your visit (but do make reservations for the restaurant).
Its commitment to horticulture, sustainable practices, and creating enchanting environments has made it a beloved place for plant lovers, food enthusiasts, and those seeking inspiration for their homes and gardens. And in 2016, it received prestigious recognition when it was granted a Royal Warrant by HRH The Price of Wales for its sustainable work in horticulture.
It\’s one of my favourite places, which is why I return here every year when I\’m back in London.
Getting there – starting in Richmond
Walking is the best way to get to Petersham in my opinion. It’s an easy and beautiful country walk along the River Thames, taking about 30-45min. Start your journey from Richmond Bridge, which is located near Richmond town center.
-
Start at the Richmond bridge, and walk along the footpath that runs parallel to the river. You will be walking in the direction of Teddington.
-
Continue along the riverside path, enjoying the scenic views of the Thames and passing by the Old Deer Park on your left.
-
As you walk, you will come across various landmarks and attractions, such as the historic Ham House and the riverside pubs and restaurants.
-
Keep following the path along the riverbank, and after approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers), you will reach Petersham Meadows.
-
Stay on the path as it leads you through Petersham Meadows, a beautiful open space with grazing cows and lovely views of the river.
-
After walking through the meadows, you will arrive at Petersham Nurseries, located on your left-hand side.
