Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark

One of my favourite day trips from Copenhagen, Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerød. Built in the 17th century by King Christian IV on the shores of Lake Slotso, it’s the largest Renaissance complex in the Nordic region. Its rich history, architectural beauty, and stunning setting make it worth the 40min train trip from Copenhagen.

The castle complex consists of multiple buildings surrounded by beautiful gardens and a large baroque-style courtyard. The most prominent feature of Frederiksborg Castle is the main palace building, which houses the National History Museum of Denmark. The museum showcases a vast collection of Danish art and historical artifacts, including portraits, furniture, silverware, and decorative arts.

The castle’s interior is lavishly decorated with intricate woodwork, elaborate tapestries, and ornate ceilings. Visitors can explore various rooms, including the Great Hall, the Chapel, and the King’s Chamber, which provide a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Danish royalty.

The gardens surrounding Frederiksborg Castle are also worth exploring. They are laid out in a formal Baroque style, with neatly manicured lawns, sculptures, and symmetrically arranged flower beds. The castle gardens, including a seasonal cafe, offer a peaceful retreat and provide a picturesque backdrop for the castle itself.

I’ve been here a few times (winter and summer) and have arrived by both car (easy and there’s a car park you have to pay for) and by train (quick trip and short walk from the station).
