Hi Alex,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post. I think it's a deep insecurity that drives someone to embrace this brand of victim-superiority and make it a badge of honor. "You don't know what I've been through. You can't or won't understand. You're not one of us." It's a way for the insecure to create power, or at least notoriety, and refusing debate or interaction with the perceived "enemy" is a way to enhance that power. You don't really have to DO anything, certainly not engage with a person or situation that is different and attempt to understand that difference and work with it. You can simply create an ideology of victim- or outsider-hood, ratchet up emotions around it, and accuse anyone who might try to question it of being ignorant or willfully hateful. Whichever side of the political divide it happens to land on--and I've seen it on both--it's still sad to see so many bright people embrace this frankly fearful approach to the world.

Wake up! Look up! We can all stride forward, making and correcting missteps as we go, but we must take those strides, not sit and sulk and admire our own perfect stillness while we aim kicks at those who move freely around us.

Just another vote for Atlas. They moved us from Denver to Salem, OR, and everything went very smoothly in spite of the fact that both houses were very difficult to get furniture in and out of. Good luck Alex. I'm still unpacking and wishing it was all over...
